Originally developed for hunting in Japan’s hilly regions, Shiba Inus were skilled at driving off small game and birds. Their ancestry dates back to 7000 BC, and archaeological evidence suggests that early ancestors existed even then. The breed’s name likely refers to their size (“small”) or the thickets where they hunted (“thickets”).
From near extinction to global recognition
During World War II, Shiba Inus experienced hardships; many of them perished from sickness or bombing. Nevertheless, efforts made to preserve the breed after the war resulted in the blending of bloodlines to produce the modern Shiba Inu. The Shiba Inu was formally acknowledged in Japan in 1936 and designated as a national treasure. In 1992, the American Kennel Club (AKC) awarded it international status.
Striking appearance and balanced build.
Standing 13.5 to 16.5 inches tall, the Shiba Inu is a study in balance and proportion. Their double coat, with a stiff outer coat and a soft undercoat, provides them with insulation and protection in varying climates. Standard colors are red, sesame red, or black and brown, with distinctive cream or white “Urajiro” markings.
Alert expression and fox-like features.
Shibas sport an audacious, fox-like facial expression. This expression symbolizes their wit and awareness. Their dark brown, triangular eyes and small, triangular, erect ears contribute to their attentive look. The muzzle is full and round, tapering slightly towards the black nose.
